Philippe Poulin is one of the winners of the ERC advanced 2023 grants with his PERLA project

The PERLA project aims to develop conductive fluids from anisotropic particles under flow. The rotation of these particles should generate the formation of conductive networks, a phenomenon that is expected based on the theoretical behavior of anisotropic particles in a flow. The challenge of the project is to test this new concept, which represents a novel situation of percolation in a non-equilibrium system. The validation of this concept would enable the creation of fluids whose conductivity varies depending on the flow conditions. These fluids could have applications in flexible electronics and soft robotics, as well as in liquid electrodes for energy storage and flow electrochemistry.
